More advanced human civilization, human has been created a lot of device that can support their activity. Starting from computer, smartphone, telephone, etc. But do you know about SmartGlasses? yeah, it’s a concept from some Sci-Fi Movies. In that movies we saw people could freely using computer without computer in front of them. SmartGlasses is just like that, SmartGlasses itself is a wearable computer glasses that add information alongside or to what the wearer sees. In short a gadget that makes you could see virtual object in real world.
SmartGlasses became popular when Google release their SmartGlasses, Google Glass. Google Glass is an Optical Head-Mounted Display (OHMD) designed in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses. Google Glass displayed information in a smartphone-like, users could conected to the Internat as well. Users control the device with a touchpad that located on the side of Google Glass. It also could take photos and record video too. Unfornately Google has been stopping production this device, but recently Google is rumored would make the successor of Google Glass in 2017.
Recently Intel has been reported making SmartGlasses too. The SmartGlasses is Vaunt. The prototype has been comfirmed and has been tested by The Verge. The design is like a normal eyeglasses, but the function is same as Google Glass. It’s because they using retinal projection. It is a display technology that draws a raster dispay (like a television) directly onto the retina of the eye. The user sees what appears to be a conventional display floating in space in front of them. But sadly, in April 2018 Intel announced that they has been giving up on its SmartGlasses.
Another product who have concept of SmartGlasses is Hololens. Hololens released by Microsoft. It’s more complex than Google Glass or Vaunt, because this device have a full computer function on it. Because of it, this device ‘almost’ could used same as modern computer right now. I said ‘almost‘ because this device still in development and lack of application. Hololens is more likely used for education, medical, and designer purpose. Although it can be used for playing games like minecraft too. They are also same device like Hololens, it is Magic Leap. As I know this device have same function as Hololens. But the Magic Leap device is more small than Hololens. But, I think another difference between these two is their control. In Hololens you just use your hand for controling the virtual object, but Magic Leap using their controller to control the device. Maybe it because Magic Leap is focused to used for multimedia purpose (like playing games or virtualized product you wanted to buy when online shopping). And of course It also on development too.
These two types of SmartGlasses have their pros and cons. SmartGlasses like Google Glass and Vaunt could be used when you go outside, but it doesn’t have a lot of features. And SmartGlasses like Hololens and Magic Leap have a lot of features but it can’t be used in outside because it’s so big. In conclusion, SmartGlasses not to worth right now, it because the device need more development and it not ready yet right now. But in my opinion, maybe SmartGlasses in the future could change our Smartphone. It because SmartGlasses is more convient and we could use it everywhere without take it something from our pocket.
